When should I do fall cleanup in NJ?

Mid-October through late November, after most leaves have dropped. Properties with heavy tree canopy often need more than one pass — an early cleanup and a final one once the last leaves fall.

Why is leaf removal so important?

A thick layer of wet leaves left over winter smothers the grass, blocks light and air, traps moisture, and invites snow mold and disease. Come spring you're left with dead patches. Removing leaves before winter is one of the highest-value things you can do for a NJ lawn.

Can I just mulch the leaves with my mower instead?

Mulching a light leaf layer back into the lawn can work and returns nutrients to the soil. But on NJ properties with mature oaks and maples, the leaf volume is far too heavy to mulch — it mats down and smothers the turf. Those properties need full removal.

How many fall cleanups do I need?

It depends on your tree canopy. A property with few trees may need a single late-fall cleanup; one surrounded by mature oaks and maples often needs two or more passes as the leaves come down in waves.
